Claerwen was originally the wand of a Welsh wizard named Mathonwy. Mathonwy was the mentor to Skarpo, who stole the wand from him, though Claerwen never worked properly for Skarpo. Charlie Bone, a descendant of Mathonwy, finds the wand by traveling into a picture of Skarpo and taking it from him. At one point in the series, Manfred Bloor attempts to destroy the wand by burning it, but the ashes turn into a moth. Later, Dagbert Endless captures the moth with an enchanted net made by Dorcas Loom. Claerwen escapes the jar that Dagbert had her in, becomes a caterpillar, and eventually grows back into a moth and flies back to Charlie.

The wand allows its user to do magical actions if the request is said in Welsh and given with proper respect. The wand will only work if its user is related to Mathonwy by blood.
As a moth, Claerwen is white with silver-tipped wings and can glow.
