Billy Raven (b.1994) is one of the endowed children of Bloor's Academy. He was descended from the Red King's second son, Amadis. His parents were Rufus and Ellen. Billy was orphaned and sent to live with an aunt who, once she discovered he was endowed, sent him to Bloor's. Now he lives there full time, when none of his friends invite him over for the weekend. Billy's endowment is talking with animals. Billy is albino with white skin and hair and dark ruby red eyes behind glasses.

History

Early Life

Billy Raven was born to Rufus and Ellen Raven in 1994 or 1995. When he was a year old, his parents died in a contrived car accident, leaving him an orphan. Billy was sent to live with an apathetic aunt, who was most likely in the pay of the Bloors. Billy first began talking to animals on his fourth birthday, and because he thought that it was something everyone could do, he didn't mention it to his aunt. By the time he turned six, he'd been having conversations with his aunt's pets for years. When his aunt finally discovered that he was endowed, she sent him to Bloor's Academy and entrusted him into the Bloors' care.

Midnight for Charlie Bone

Billy is seven years old. He meets Charlie Bone on Charlie's first day at Bloor's and guides him to the King's Room. That night he overhears Charlie talking with Gabriel Silk about Charlie's cloak and Gabriel's endowment, and asks Gabriel to put on a scarf he always has with him (which was once his father's), as he wants to know what his father was thinking and feeling.

On Friday and Saturday, Billy keeps Charlie and Olivia company when the two have detention. He goes along with them exploring the old rundown tower and like Olivia and Charlie overhears Dr Bloor and Manfred talking about Emilia Moon and Mr Pilgrim.

On Friday night, Billy asks Charlie to look at an old photo of his parents, as he wants to know if they said anything. Charlie overhears Rufus and Ellen's thoughts and hears Dr Bloor speaking in the photo, but as what he hears isn't very happy he lies to Billy and tells him that his parents were thinking happily about him and how he was a star. Billy smiles and does not question this.

Charlie offers to let Billy come home with him next weekend. Billy happily agrees. However, on Saturday night, Billy is invited to visit Mr Ezekiel in the Bloors' quarters in the West Wing. Mr Ezekiel tells Billy that he has found some nice parents for him and that they will adopt him if he agrees to spy on Charlie for the Bloors. Faced with the prospect of finally being adopted and having loving parents, Billy readily agrees. Therefore, the next weekend when he rides to 9 Filbert Street with Charlie, he witnesses as Emilia Moon wakes up from her trance and tells Ezekiel what happened once he has returned to Bloor's. As a result of this, Emilia/Emma is found out and taken to Bloor's Academy.

On the night the music students play the Ruin Game, Billy manages to find the medal first. Charlie happens upon him while he is trying to find his way back out of the ruin, but Billy refuses to let him return outside with him and runs away. Later that night, after Charlie is rescued from the ruin and the boys are in their dormitory, Charlie confronts Billy about how he betrayed them, but Billy defends himself by saying that he just wanted to be adopted.

Charlie Bone and the Time Twister

A couple months after book 1, Billy continues spying for the Bloors, something that earns him gifts such as late night hot chocolate and warm furry winter boots. As Billy works for the Bloors now, Charlie and his friends dislike him and don't trust him. During the course of the story, Billy helps the Bloors by spying on Charlie, tricking Henry into revealing himself and capturing him, and trying to convince Charlie to steal the dagger from Skarpo's painting.

Charlie Bone and the Blue Boa

Months after the end of Time Twister, Billy is lonely in Bloor's Academy. He regrets kicking Blessed, as the old dog is now not speaking to him, leaving him with no one to talk to. On the day of his birthday, Billy witnesses Yolanda Yewbeam hypnotising Samuel Sparks/Mr Boldova, an action that terrifies him, and befriends Mr Boldova's rat Rembrandt after the art teacher abandons it.

Siding

"I know people think I'm a spy, but I won't tell Manfred or Mr. Ezekiel about what I saw. I promise."

-Billy Raven, book three

Billy is what you would call a "two-faced character." In the first book, he is friends with Charlie, but towards the end of the book Ezekiel Bloor tells him he will have nice parents to adopt him, which is Billy's dearest wish. However, Ezekiel will only do this if he is a spy for the Bloors to find out what Charlie has been up to. Billy agrees. In the second book he fulfills his role as a spy for the Bloors and Charlie is now suspicious and aware of Billy Raven's spying on him.

In the third book he helps Charlie with the mission of helping Ollie Sparks become visible by talking to the Blue Boa, who befriends him. Billy is fond of Rembrandt, Mr. Boldova's rat. He also befriends Cook's dog Blessed, who often tells Billy things that he's seen.

Through this constant swapping of sides, in The Shadow of Badlock, Charlie and his friends can't include Billy in their scheming and planning and so Billy is either stuck at Bloor's, for the first time in a while, Charlie forgets to invite him, or over at an unendowed or unimportant child's house.

In the eighth book, he is adopted by Charlie's parents, Lyell and Amy, thus becoming Charlie's adoptive brother.
